Permutation: A permutation of a number (= n) of elements, or of numbers, corresponds to an arrangement of these elements in succession. Two permutations are equal when, and only when, the elements, the numbers, in both are placed in the same order. For n = 2 there are two permutations (1,2) and (2,1), for n = 3 there are six (1,2,3), (1,3,2), (2,1,3), (2,3,1), (3,1,2) and (3,2,1). Generally it can be shown that the number of permutations of n different elements is 1.2.3...(n-1) = n! (n factorial).
